Can I use regular OREOs instead of fudge-covered ones?
Yes! You can dip your regular OREOs instead of buying the fudge-covered OREOs. Simply following my instructions for dipping OREOs here. These Ghirardelli dark chocolate melting wafers are perfect for these Oreo penguins.
I can’t find the candy eyes, what can I use instead?
You can use mini chocolate chips or draw eyes with icing if candy eyes aren’t available. I can usually find them at stores like Target but they are a ton of options for candy eyes on Amazon as well.
Variations to Try
- Add a matching scarf with a candy straw, airheads extremes or a strip of fruit leather or icing!
- Use marshmallows (white or pink would be great!) instead of the Junior Mints for the earmuffs.
- Switch up the Twizzler and candy melt colors to match party themes.
- Add sprinkles or edible glitter for a touch of holiday sparkle.
Trish’s Tips
- Cut the M&Ms and lay out all the rest of the candy before melting the chocolate so you can work quickly and efficiently before the chocolate hardens.
- Work in small batches when melting chocolate to prevent it from hardening while decorating.
- Use a sharp knife to cut the M&Ms for clean, even halves.
- If the chocolate cools too quickly, reheat it for a few seconds to keep it smooth and workable.
- Pull n Peel Twizzlers are sold in bunches of 9 strands. You’ll only need 1 full bunch, split into 4 pieces of 2 strands each. There will be more than enough to make 2 inch long bands for each of the 12 penguins.
- Use food grade gloves when decorating to keep the heat from your hands from melting the chocolate on the OREOs.
- Have fun with this and don’t expect every penguin to look identical – that is part of the charm of these Penguin cookies!
