Homemade Simply Delicious Sausage Gravy is so easy to make using my Nana’s recipe!
So I’m about to let you in on a little family secret…
…we love sausage gravy! Â
Ask Bryce any time of the day what he wants to eat and nine times out of ten he will answer with sausage gravy. He eats it by the spoonful – no biscuits required! The rest of us eat more civilly with yummy, buttery biscuits 🙂  It has long been a family favorite and it’s really a cinch to pull together. The recipe I use calls for only a handful of ingredients and can be easily customized to your family’s tastes and preferences. If you like your gravy a little runnier, use a little less flour and a little more milk. If you like it nice and thick try using a little less milk. Try adding in some red pepper flakes or cayenne to spice it up a little. Throw in some herbs to really add some depth of flavor – sage is delicious!
Ingredients:
1 pound breakfast sausage
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk or half & half, heavy whipping cream, evaporated milk – pretty much any dairy product 😉
Black pepper to taste – I use lots of cracked black pepper
pinch of sugar {cause that’s what my Nana used!}
Directions:
Brown sausage. Season liberally with black pepper. Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage and stir. Let flour cook for 1-2 minutes and then gradually add milk, stirring as you pour. Bring gravy to a simmer and let thicken. This is where my Nana adds a pinch of sugar and so do I. She told me that it helps the gravy brown and I guess that makes sense because the sugar is caramelizing. Who knew?
I love serving Simply Delicious Sausage Gravy over my Perfect Biscuits – breakfast perfection my friends!
Did I mention – no shirt required?
Awwww yeah!

Thank you for this recipe. I made it this weekend to take to a potluck biscuit brunch. It was easy – the perfect ratio of ingredients – and they ate every bite!

That makes me very happy Ann! Thank you so much for the positive feedback!

So happy to hear that Sarah! Glad you enjoyed the recipe 🙂

This looks much like the kind my sis-in-law makes which is delicious and loved by her family. Personally, I prefer a LOT more gravy in my B&G so I add about 50% more flour and milk plus a little cream at the end. I’ve never heard of adding sugar. I do sometimes add cayenne or pepper flakes if the sausage is a little bland.

Totally adjustable Kelley. My boys love it this way and my husband likes moe gravy. Thanks for stopping by!

I wanted to thank you for sharing your Nana’s recipe. I’ve made this a few times now and my family LOVES it! I think the pinch of sugar at the right time really does enhance it. You can’t ever go wrong with a Nana recipe!

Jodi says
Okay I hope this isn’t a stupid question but with all your dairy ingredients, do you mean just use 2 cups of one of those options?

.jodi… Lol…I have the same question!! I am wondering the same thing!

This looks amazing! My husband is forever asking for breakfast for dinner and I feel like its never enough, this looks like it would be a great addition to the meal!
Trish - Mom On Timeout says
Definitely Stephanie! I make this at least once a week and it’s easily the most requested meal in our house 🙂
Erica says
I have never, ever, ever made sausage gravy over biscuits. Mostly because with three kids I don’t have time or the bravery to make something that I may or may not ruin.
Well, my husband was on the verge of leaving me unless I made some, so I did a search and I used this recipe.
It’s absolutely easy and absolutely delish!
You may have saved my marriage! lol
THANK YOU!
And also, I freeze left over biscuits, pancakes and waffles all the time. Just let them thaw before serving. I let them sit out for about an hour and that does the trick. 🙂
Trish - Mom On Timeout says
Oh my goodness Erica! I just read this comment to my husband and he was laughing so hard! I am so glad that you gave it a try and yes – it’s EASY! So glad to save your marriage and thank you so much for stopping by and letting me know how it went! Hope you had a wonderful Easter!
Danielle says
How would this freeze? Im trying to freeze a bunch of breakfast options for my kids and they love biscuits and gravy. Also have you tried freezing your biscuits?
Trish - Mom On Timeout says
I have never tried freezing it Danielle so I’m not sure. The biscuits should freeze fine. You might want to just freeze the dough.
Ashley @ Kitchen Meets Girl says
My husband LOVES sausage gravy – I’m going to have to try your trick of adding sugar next time!

I give the credit to my Nana 🙂 She was a master in kitchen!
