20 Fun Earth Facts for Earth Day!
Earth Day is almost here! Reece has been working on Earth Day projects at school for the past two weeks and everyday he comes home with some new information – got to love kindergarten! I thought it would be fun to share some Earth Facts with you guys. Never know when you’ll need this information!
- The Nile River is the longest river on Earth. It measures 4,160 miles in length.
- Mt. Everest is the highest mountain on Earth. It’s peak measures 29,029 feet above sea level.
- The lowest point on Earth is the Dead Sea measuring 1,302 feet below seal level.
- The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest on Earth.
- The Sahara Desert is the largest desert on Earth, covering approximately 1/3 of Africa.
- The Atlantic Ocean is the saltiest ocean of the major oceans.
- Earth is approximately 70% water. Of that, 97% is salt water and remaining is fresh water.
- Is the Earth round? Almost! It’s slightly flattened at the North and South poles.
- Earth is the third planet from the sun.
- Earth is 93 million miles away from the sun.
- It takes 8 minutes for the energy from the sun to reach Earth.
- Earth rotates around the sun at about 1,000 miles per hour.
- Earth is the fifth largest planet in diameter.
- Earth is referred to as the blue planet. Earth looks blue because from outer space the oceans and atmosphere combine to make our planet look blue.
- Earth’s circumference measure almost 25,000 miles.
- Earth’s diameter is 8,000 miles.
- 80% of all life on Earth lives under the surface of the ocean.
- Most volcanoes take place under the water.
- Magma is the hot liquid rock under the surface of the Earth. When magma comes out of a volcano it is know as lava.
- If an earthquake occurs from under the sea it can cause a Tsunami.

I love trivia. Question regarding Number 14. It has always been known a the Blue Planet, however, we did not go into outer space until April 12, 1961 and that was the Russians. Hod did we know that it was a Blue Planet before then? Why doesn’t anyone ever ask about that or at last comment on it?
